The largest facility in Polk County's detention system, the South County Jail in Frostproof, was completed in late 1999. The grand opening ceremony was held March 21, 2000. The facility was designed to house up to 1,008 inmates. In 2010, the South County Jail was expanded to house 1,776 inmates. The expansion also added video visitation capabilities, allowing for more flexible inmate visitation schedules.

Current inmate populations include: adult male general population inmates, adult male Direct Supervision inmates, adult male trusties (inmate workers), and adult male Jail Alternatives to Substance Abuse (JASA) program inmates.

The South County Jail offers various programming to eligible inmates. Additionally, life skills, faith based, and substance abuse programs are also available for inmates to attend.

A courtroom is provided at the South County Jail for First Appearance Hearings. Visitors can watch these proceedings in the lobby of the South County Jail seven days a week.
