The General Crimes investigations Unit (GCU) is located within each of the patrol districts. Detectives assigned to the GCU are responsible for conducting follow-up investigations on felony property crimes, a number of felony persons crimes, and some misdemeanor crimes. Many of their investigations focus on burglaries, thefts, aggravated assaults, strong arm robberies, and domestic violence.
Some detectives within the GCU are responsible specifically for the investigation of auto and metal thefts. There is also a Sheriff's Service Officer assigned in each division to conduct pawn shop inspections and to work in concert with detectives to identify stolen property that has been pawned.
Additionally, GCU detectives occasionally conduct proactive initiatives in areas where there has been an identified trend of criminal activity.
