Theft of Historical Pistols from Museum

In a joint investigation, the Bartow Police Department and the Polk County Sheriff's Office are investigating the theft of three pistols stolen from the Polk County Historical Museum located in Bartow. Detectives believe the thefts occurred between June 26 and July 3, 1999. The pistols were stolen from locked displays and storage areas in the historical museum. The pistols are described as:

  • DreyseBlack Dreyse 7.65 mm semi-automatic pistol in a green leather case, six inches in length, four inches high, with a one-inch barrel, serial number 193321, with inscription "Rheiniche Metallwaaren-& Maschinenfarik" "Abt. Sommerda." Background: donor was a PFC in WWII who took pistol from a German officer taken prisoner in France.
  • Black Colt 45 semi-automatic pistol, white plastic pistol grip, background: belonged to General Van Fleet.
  • ColtBlack Colt 45 semi-automatic pistol, brown civilian holster, model 1911, background unknown.

Detectives are seeking assistance in solving the crime, and encourage anyone with information who wants to be eligible for a reward to call the Polk County Crime Stoppers line at 1-800-226-TIPS.
