Sheriff's Office Solves 16-Year-Old Homicide

The Polk County Sheriff's Office Bureau of Criminal Investigations has charged Dewey Vernon Pollard, DOB 12/12/54, last known Polk County address of 2213 Hurst Road in Auburndale with first degree murder in the death of Jeffery Allen Maggard.

On September 4, 1984 two surveyors discovered the skeletal remains of an individual later identified as Jeffery Allen Maggard in a wooded area in northwest Lakeland. Maggard was last seen alive leaving his Seffner home in August of 1983. Investigators believe Maggard was shot twice in the head by Pollard after an apparent drug deal. A Polk County Grand Jury has indicted Pollard for the murder.

Pollard was indicted by the Grand Jury in October 1999 for the death of David Williams, DOB 07/27/59 of 723 7th Street in Winter Haven.

Williams, who was twenty years old at the time of his death, was reported missing during the week of August 23, 1979. On October 6, 1979 hunters found the skeletal remains of Williams in a wooded area near State Road 540 and Thornhill Road in Auburndale.

Williams was last seen alive on August 23, 1979 leaving a bar on Havendale Boulevard with Pollard. According to witnesses, Pollard robbed Williams and then took him to the wooded area where he was shot once in the head.

Pollard is currently being held in the Polk County Jail awaiting trial in the Williams homicide. According to Polk County Sheriff's Office arrest records, Pollard has been arrested 37 times in Polk County from 1974-1983.
