Polk County Sheriff Lawrence W. Crow, Jr., presented Sheriff's Commendations to two Hillcrest Elementary School third graders this morning (Thursday, Sept. 21) in recognition of their efforts to notify school officials of a gun on campus in August.
The special ceremony, held at the Lake Wales school, was broadcast over the school's video news program. Sheriff Crow presented the two students with Commendations and a $50 savings bond each. Lake Wales Police Chief Mark LeVine presented the children with Outstanding Citizen Awards and an additional $50 savings bond each. School officials rewarded the boys with gift certificates from Toy R Us and an autographed basketball from the Orlando Magic.
The two third graders - Andre Lewis, Jr., and Anthony Raggs, Jr., - spotted a gun in the backpack of a fellow student while riding to school on the bus August 18, 2000. The pair notified school officials and the gun was confiscated on campus and the student arrested without incident.
"I am extremely proud of these kids. Their bravery and dedication to doing the right thing averted what could have been yet another terrible and senseless tragedy," Sheriff Crow said. "Students like these are the hope of the future - they are the ones who will make our schools a safer place."
