Polk County Sheriff's Office Robbery Detectives have arrested and charged two Lakeland men with the July 17 armed robbery of the Colonial Bank located at 212 N. Commonwealth Ave. in Polk City.
The two suspects arrested were:
Jonathan Williams, DOB 04/14/81, of 1121 Martin Luther King Blvd. in Lakeland, charged with armed burglary, 2 counts armed robbery, resisting arrest without violence and attempted murder of a law enforcement officer.
Matthew Elliot, DOB 03/28/81, of 321 Imperial Blvd. in Lakeland, charged with armed burglary, 2 counts armed robbery, resisting arrest without violence and attempted murder of a law enforcement officer.
On Friday, July 17 a black male and while male entered the Colonial Bank in Polk City wearing ski masks. One suspect fired a shot into the ceiling while the second suspect jumped the counter and demanded money from bank employees. As both suspects fled the scene, one of the suspects pointed a gun at an off duty corrections officer in the lobby of the bank and fired two shots in the officers direction.
The investigation led detectives to the Motel 6 located on Hwy. 98 North in Lakeland where approximately $3,000 in cash that contained dye residue was found in a room rented by Jonathan Williams. No one was injured during the robbery or the arrest. Both suspects are being held in the Polk County Jail with no bond.
The investigation continues and additional arrest are expected.
