Lakeland Mud Bog Owner Arrested

The Polk County Sheriff's Office Bureau of Special Investigations Vice Unit arrested Roy Eugene Spiker, Sr., DOB 11/06/48 of 1363 Berkley Rd. in Auburndale, on June 3, 2000 and charged him with 5 counts of culpable negligence as a result of an undercover investigation at the Lakeland Drag Strip, also known as the Lakeland Mud Bog, located at 8300 U.S. Highway 33 North in Lakeland. Mr. Spiker is the owner of the business.

During the investigation, detectives observed reckless driving through spectator areas, spectators thrown from the sidelines into the mud bogging area during mud bogging activities, spectators allowed to walk and play in the mud bogging area during activities, juveniles allowed to stand in the back of pick up trucks during mud bogging runs and drivers consuming alcohol with juveniles in the vehicle while mud bogging. At least one vehicle, with juveniles inside, had no brakes. In addition to the charges against Mr. Spiker, 5 other individuals were charged with possession of an alcoholic beverage by a person under 21 years of age.

The Polk County Sheriff's Office will continue to investigate and enforce underage drinking in the county. The Department of Alcohol Beverage and Tobacco is working closely with the Polk County Sheriff's Office to identify businesses who allow underage drinking or sale to underage consumers.
