Two Charged in Shooting of Exotic Animals

Polk County Sheriff's Office Agricultural Unit deputies arrested and charged two Lake Wales individuals during an investigation into the shooting of another exotic animal in Frostproof. Deputies received an anonymous tip that led to the arrest of:

  • Anthony Wayne Chandler, DOB 10/12/81, of 2519 Blue Bream Drive in Lake Wales, charged with grand theft and possession of firearm during the commission of a felony.
  • Charles Michael Johnson, DOB 10/28/82, of 3701 Rolling Hills Court East in Lake Wales, charged with grand theft and possession of firearm during the commission of a felony.

Both suspects are charged with unlawfully shooting and killing a Nilgai female antelope belonging to the FX Bar Ranch. On December 20, 1999, the two suspects shined a light in the pasture beyond the fenced property belonging to the FX Bar Ranch and saw several antelope. Charles Johnson shot at the antelope with an unknown caliber rifle, wounding one. Anthony Chandler entered the FX Bar Ranch property by climbing a fence and shot the wounded antelope again, killing it. The two individuals then took the animal to the residence of Anthony Chandler where the antelope was cleaned and the meat was saved. W. R. Fewox of the FX Bar Ranch told deputies the antelope was pregnant at the time it was killed and the value of the animal was approximately $2,000.

Both individuals have been booked into the Juvenile Assessment Center.
