School Crossing Guard to be Recognized for 40 Years of Service at Retirement Party

In recognition of 40 years of dedicated service, a retirement party and recognition ceremony will be held for School Crossing Guard Opal E. Floyd at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2000, at Lena Vista Elementary School in Auburndale (208 South Berkley Road).

School Crossing Guard Opal Floyd is retiring after 40 years of crossing students at Lena Vista Elementary. She began her career as a School Crossing Guard with the Polk County Sheriff's Office when her twin sons entered school at Lena Vista in 1960. She remained a dedicated and loyal crossing guard for the next four decades.

"She dedicated 40 years of her life to making sure that our community's children were safe as they walked back and forth to school every day," said Vera Freeze, School Crossing Supervisor.

School Crossing Guards are part-time members of the Polk County Sheriff's Office and are assigned to specific schools/locations throughout the county. It is their responsibility to oversee the safe crossing of young children walking to and from school. They are committed to reporting to their posts daily, often in inclement weather.

For more information, contact the School Crossing office at 534-0980. Media is invited to attend the retirement party.
