The Polk County Board of County Commissioners purchased the South County Jail from Corrections Corporation of America in December of 1999. Built to state and federal standards by the well-respected Centex Rooney construction firm, the 1008-bed complex is a highly secure, state-of-the-art detention facility. The South County Jail is a part of the Polk County Jail system that is managed and operated by the Polk County Sheriff's Office. The jail will receive county inmates and begin operation on April 1, 2000. This project represents a cooperative partnership between city and county officials, law enforcement, and the community to create an alliance of excellence with Public safety as the highest priority.
