Polk County Sheriff's Office Homicide Detectives arrested a 21-year-old Lakeland woman this evening (Thursday, Nov. 30, 2000) and charged her with the 1998 murder of her 18-month-old daughter.
Christina Wilson, DOB 2/17/79, of 415 Saddlebag Lane in Lakeland, was arrested this evening and charged with First Degree Murder and Aggravated Child Abuse in the January 1998 death of her daughter, Shyane Oakley.
On January 23, 1998, victim Shyane Oakley, DOB 8/25/96, of 2526 Weber Street in Lakeland, was transported to Lakeland Regional Medical Center and then airlifted to St. Joseph's Hospital for treatment of life-threatening massive head injuries. Shyane died at St. Joseph's Hospital six days later on January 29, 1998. The Hillsborough County Medical Examiner determined that she died from blunt impact head trauma and was the victim of repeated sexual battery. A suspect in the sexual battery was arrested at the time and later found incompetent to stand trial.
The active homicide investigation continued, and detectives developed information leading to charges against the mother, Christina Wilson, for her daughter's murder. The charges are based on evidence and information collected during the investigation, including recent statements from Wilson to detectives in which she admitted to slamming her daughter's head against a tub three or four times, causing the injuries that resulted in the girl's death.
