Disturbance at Avon
Park Youth Academy Results in Multiple Arrests
The Polk County Sheriff's Office
responded to a disturbance at the Avon Park Youth Academy today, which
resulted in twenty-one arrests.
At 7:40 a.m. today, staff members at the Avon Park Youth Academy, a
privately owned facility that houses adjudicated delinquent youths,
attempted to break up a fight between two residents. As staff members
attempted to break up the fight, numerous other residents of the facility
began to fight among themselves.
At approximately 10:15 a.m., the Polk County Sheriff's Office received a
report of a possible riot at the facility. After awaiting the
arrival of the Polk County Sheriff's Office Detention Disturbance Team
(DDT), a group of deputies specially trained to handle detention
disturbances, deputies entered the facility and made multiple arrests.
All of the individuals arrested, both juveniles and adults (18 years
of age), were charged with inciting a riot within a detention facility
(F-3 Felony). Three of the residents arrested, Nicholas Merrill, DOB
11/3/83, Rafael Fernandez, DOB 12/15/84, and Gregory Zipperer, DOB
4/14/83, were also charged with resisting arrest with violence.
