Back to School Safety Tips

With the start of the new school year, the Polk County Sheriff's Office would like to remind students and motorist to keep safety a #1 priority as students walk or ride bicycles to and from school. Students are asked to observe the following safety tips:
Look left, right and left again before crossing a road.
Obey all traffic signs and lights.
Use the sidewalk and never wander from the path to school.
Walk, never run, through a crossing. Obey the crossing guard.
Always wear a helmet when riding a bike.
Always ride your bike with traffic.
Look both ways before riding out of a driveway.
Check for traffic before making a turn.

Motorists are asked to make school zones "safe zones" by observing all school zone speed limits and obeying school crossing guards. Sheriff's Office Traffic Unit members will be monitoring and enforcing the speed limit in all school zones. Remember, speeding fines/penalties in a school zone are doubled.

For more information on bicycle safety or school crossing safety, please contact the Polk County Sheriff's Office Community Services Section at 863-534-0980.
