Polk to Participate in "Cease Fire" Gun Buy-Back Project Slated for Saturday, September 15, 2001

The second "Cease Fire" Gun Buy-Back project to take place in Polk County will be held this Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at two Polk County Sheriff's Office substations.

The "Cease Fire" program emphasizes safety and responsibility with firearms, and promotes the responsible ownership, storage and use of firearms. The program offers adult citizens a safe alternative to dispose of unwanted firearms.  “Cease Fire” is neither anti-gun or pro-gun, and takes no position on gun-related legislation. It is simply an opportunity for citizens to turn in unwanted firearms in a safe manner in exchange for gift certificates. Gun safety is the main issue. Free gun locks will be distributed during the project.

Adults only are asked to bring unloaded firearms in a secure container, preferably in the trunk of a vehicle, to one of two Sheriff's Office gun buy-back sites:

Southwest District Headquarters, located at 4120 US Highway 98 South, South of Lakeland.

Ridge District Headquarters, located at 860 Thompson Nursery Road, North of Lake Wales.

Once parked at the substations, participants are asked to remain standing by their vehicle and wait for a deputy to assist them with the safe and proper removal of the firearms.

Firearms will be exchanged for $50 gift certificates redeemable at any Bealls Department Store or Bealls Outlet Store. There is a limit of three certificates per person, although there is no limit on the number of firearms that can be turned in.

Firearms turned in during the program will be checked to determine if they have ever been involved in a crime or are stolen. Otherwise, all firearms will be destroyed. No firearm received during this program will be sold or used as a firearm in the future.

All types of firearms (by legal description) will be accepted: handguns, rifles, long guns, assault weapons, etc. Guns must be operable or nearly operable.

The following will be accepted, but no certificate issued: BB guns, air rifles and guns missing major parts.
