Man Arrested for
Sexual Battery on a Child
investigation by the Polk County Sheriff's Office SAFE (Sexual Abuse and
Family Exploitation) Unit, a 41-year-old former Lakeland man was arrested
late Wednesday night (Oct. 31, 2001) in the Orlando area for sexual
battery against a child.
Derrick Moseley, DOB 8/20/60, formerly of
Lakeland, was arrested in Orange County and charged with two counts Sexual
Battery on a child in his custody. Moseley left the Lakeland area
approximately two months ago. Detectives tracked him down to a
motel/apartment complex located at 1951 West Central Florida Parkway Room
116 in Orlando, where he was arrested late Wednesday night.
In May of 2000, Moseley was the head of a Children's Advocacy Group (MAD
DADS) in Lakeland, and was pastor of a "home church" that operated out of
his home located at 1050 Canal Street in Lakeland. According to
detectives, Moseley focused his ministry on children and often held
sleepovers for children at his home/church. During one of these
sleepovers in the summer of 2000, the suspect sexually battered a
13-year-old female victim.
Later that summer, Moseley moved in with a friend at a residence located
at 1234 Reynolds Road in Lakeland . The "home church" activities and
sleepovers continued at this new residence. Detectives determined that
Moseley again sexually battered the 13-year-old female in September of
2000. The victim became pregnant, and DNA evidence has proven that
Moseley is the father of the child.
Anyone who may have any additional information about this case or any
other possible sexual battery cases involving the suspect is asked to call
the Polk County Sheriff's Office at 533-0444.
