Shooting Results in Death
At 7:33 a.m. today,
the Polk County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of a shooting that
occurred at 2603 Saddle Creek Road in Lakeland.
Deputies arrived on scene and found that Chris Gibbs, DOB 12/13/64, of 251
West Central in Winter Haven, had been shot multiple times in the
chest with a hand-gun. The suspect, Paul
Donahoe, DOB 4/27/62, of 2603 Saddle Creek Road in Lakeland, was
arrested and charged with First Degree Murder.
Detectives learned that the suspect and his wife, Kelly Donahoe, DOB
4/20/66, of Sand Mountain Loop in Lakeland, had been separated for
approximately 8 months. During this time, Gibbs and Mrs. Donahoe
became involved in a relationship. The suspect, who had known the
victim for approximately 5 years and worked with him at a local drywall
company, contacted his wife and Gibbs to arrange a meeting between the
three of them so they could discuss the situation.
At approximately 7:30 a.m. this morning, Gibbs was driven by a friend,
Douglas Bushnell, 33, of Winter Haven, to the suspect's home so they could
talk about his relationship with the suspect's wife. Although Mrs.
Donahoe had not yet arrived at her husband's home for the meeting, the
victim knocked on the suspect's door while Bushnell waited in the truck.
Paul Donahoe opened the front door and immediately fired several shots,
hitting Gibbs a number of times in the chest. After initially
collapsing, Gibbs was able to move away from the suspect. Bushnell, who
was waiting in the truck, dialed 911 and then tackled the suspect and was
able to disarm him. After being disarmed, Donahoe went back inside
his home. Kelly Donahoe arrived at the location shortly after the
As emergency services were in route, citizens driving by the scene stopped
to help the victim. Shortly after being transported to LRMC by an
ambulance, Gibbs was pronounced dead.
