Shooting Results in Death

At 7:33 a.m. today, the Polk County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of a shooting that occurred at 2603 Saddle Creek Road in Lakeland.

Deputies arrived on scene and found that Chris Gibbs, DOB 12/13/64, of 251 West Central in Winter Haven,  had been shot multiple times in the chest with a hand-gun.  The suspect, Paul Donahoe, DOB 4/27/62, of 2603 Saddle Creek Road in Lakeland, was arrested and charged with First Degree Murder.

Detectives learned that the suspect and his wife, Kelly Donahoe, DOB 4/20/66, of Sand Mountain Loop in Lakeland,  had been separated for approximately 8 months.  During this time, Gibbs and Mrs. Donahoe became involved in a relationship.  The suspect, who had known the victim for approximately 5 years and worked with him at a local drywall company, contacted his wife and Gibbs to arrange a meeting between the three of them so they could discuss the situation.

At approximately 7:30 a.m. this morning, Gibbs was driven by a friend, Douglas Bushnell, 33, of Winter Haven, to the suspect's home so they could talk about his relationship with the suspect's wife.  Although Mrs. Donahoe had not yet arrived at her husband's home for the meeting, the victim knocked on the suspect's door while Bushnell waited in the truck. Paul Donahoe opened the front door and immediately fired several shots, hitting Gibbs a number of times in the chest.  After initially collapsing, Gibbs was able to move away from the suspect. Bushnell, who was waiting in the truck, dialed 911 and then tackled the suspect and was able to disarm him.  After being disarmed, Donahoe went back inside his home.  Kelly Donahoe arrived at the location shortly after the shooting.

As emergency services were in route, citizens driving by the scene stopped to help the victim. Shortly after being transported to LRMC by an ambulance, Gibbs was pronounced dead.
