PCSO COP Deputy Creates Summer Camp For Area Youth

Deputy Sheriff Keith Lovett, assigned to the Community Oriented Police (COP) Unit
stationed in Highland City, came up with an idea for a summer youth camp, then coordinated
with a local church and the Polk County School Board to put the plan into action.  As a result,
the first-ever “Camp Silver Star” will take place during the week of June 10 through
June 14, 2002.

Camp Silver Star is for children aged 8 to 12 years and costs only $10.00 per child for the whole
week.  The $10.00 fee covers all activities, field trips, and lunches.  In fact, the School Board is
providing lunches for every camp participant free of charge.  Polk County Deputy Sheriffs will
be camp counselors.  Campers will enjoy a wide range of activities including: sporting events,
games, outdoor skills and crafts, and various presentations by area agencies such as PCSO
specialty units, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Animal Services, and
Fire/EMS.  Additionally, campers will enjoy a field trip to a local theme park, and SAMS
Wholesale Club will host a barbecue lunch on the last day of camp.

Deputies are currently visiting the COP areas handing out applications to parents who would like
to send their children to the camp.  Parents will be responsible for dropping off their children at
the camp, which will be located at the Trinity Christian Center, 4416 East CR 540-A, Highland
City, between the hours of 6:00 and 7:00 a.m., and picking them up between the hours of 5:00
and 6:00 p.m.

Sponsors of the camp include the Trinity Church, who is providing the camp facility at no cost to
the Sheriff's Office; Polk County School Board; Lakeland Police Department Athletic League;
Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission; Office of Neighborhood Revitalization;
Haagen Dazs; Publix; and SAMS Wholesale Club.

If you are interested in participating in Camp Silver Star or need any additional information,
please contact Deputy Sheriff Lovett at (863) 512-3078 by Monday, June 10, 2002.
