Back To School Safety Tips

Sheriff Lawrence W. Crow, Jr. reminds motorists to be vigilant next week when the Polk County School District 2002-2003 year begins on Wednesday, August 7, 2002.  Sheriff's Office school crossing guards will be assisting children through the more than 160 school crossings in the county.  For the safety of our children and fellow citizens, please do not speed through the
designated school zones, and obey school crossing guards.  Remember, speeding fines/penalties in school zones are doubled.

Students are asked to observe the following safety tips:

Look left, right and left again before crossing a road.
Obey all traffic signs and lights.
Use the sidewalk and never wander from the path to school.
Walk, never run, through a crossing. Obey the crossing guard.
Always wear a helmet when riding a bike.
Always ride your bike with traffic.
Look both ways before riding out of a driveway.
Check for traffic before making a turn.

Parents are also encouraged to educate their children not to talk to strangers while standing at bus stops or traveling to and from school, and to report any suspicious person or activity to a responsible adult or the proper authorities.

For more information on bicycle safety or school crossing safety, please contact the Polk County Sheriff's Office Community Services Section at 863-534-0980.
