Woman Arrested For Manslaughter of Premature Newborn

Polk County Sheriff's Office Homicide detectives arrested Brandy E. Lizalde, DOB 7/6/77, of 4421 Lighthouse Ave. in Lake Wales, on September 18, 2002, and charged her with Manslaughter after the death of her prematurely born infant.  An anonymous reportee called the Sheriff's Office early in the morning on Wednesday, September 18th, and an investigation began.  Detectives learned the following information through their investigation:

  • Brandy Lizalde was told she was pregnant on August 9, 2002, while she was an inmate in the Polk County Jail.
  • Brandy visited the Winter Haven Hospital Emergency Room on September 12th, complaining of vaginal bleeding.  During her examination, Brandy heard the fetal heartbeat of her baby.  Doctors advised Brandy to seek prenatal care at the Regency Medical Center, at which time she said she would not, and signed paperwork to that effect.
  • On September 17th, the vaginal bleeding continued, and Brandy delivered a male baby in a bathroom of a residence at 104 4th Street East in Wahneta.  The baby died shortly after birth.
  • Brandy, in an attempt to hide the body, placed the body in a plastic bag and tried to burn it.  When that failed, Brandy placed the body in a cardboard box and hid it in a grove in Southeast Winter Haven off of Eloise Loop Road, where it was later found by detectives.
  • The medical examiner conducted an autopsy on the body and was able to determine that the baby did live after he was born but died a short time later.  Cause of death is pending toxicology reports.

Brandy has been booked into the Polk County Jail, where she has been charged with
Manslaughter and is being held on $15,000 bond.
