Third Suspect In First Union Bank Robbery Turns Himself In

David Lee Burks, DOB 7/20/81, of 344 Ruby Lake Loop in Winter Haven, was arrested by Warrants Detective Chuck Hicks at the Polk County Jail in Bartow on September 24, 2002.  Burks had a warrant for his arrest for the armed robbery committed at the First Union Bank, 5720 Cypress Gardens Blvd in Winter Haven, on August 12, 2002.  Burks’ accomplices, Stacey Sawyer and David Melvin, were booked into the Polk County Jail last week for this and other armed robberies.

On August 12, 2002, a black male suspect brandishing a handgun robbed the First Union bank at approximately 9:40 a.m. that morning, and fled with $40,000.  On September 18, 2002, Detectives arrested Stacey Sawyer and David Melvin (profiled in Crimestoppers bulletins and a prior news release) for the crime.  After the arrests, Robbery Detective Ed Moran interviewed the co-defendants.  Sawyer advised that Burks was a full participant in the First Union robbery.  Burks drove David Melvin to the First Union bank and acted as a lookout inside the bank during the robbery.  Burks also drove Melvin away from the scene after Melvin robbed the bank at gunpoint.  For his part in the robbery, Burks received $10,000 of the stolen cash.  David Melvin’s statements corroborated Sawyers’ story, and based upon those facts, an arrest warrant was issued for Burks’ arrest.

Burks, who fled to Jacksonville after the robbery, returned to Polk County and turned himself in at the Polk County Jail, where he is being held on no bond.
