Polk County Sheriff's Office detectives are investigating an incident in which a suspect was shot and killed during an attempted arrest by U.S. Marshals.
At approximately 8:30 a.m. this morning (Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2002), two U.S. Marshals attempted to arrest two suspects in the parking lot of Wal-Mart located on US Highway 27 in Haines City. Both suspects were wanted on outstanding fugitive warrants for escape.
During the attempted arrest, one suspect - Juan Castellanos, DOB 2/23/59 of 1519 Golfview Drive in Haines City - was shot. Castellanos was airlifted to Lakeland Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. He was wanted for escape from Little Rock, Arkansas, and had originally been in jail on cocaine smuggling charges.
The second suspect - Arturo Hoyos, DOB 6/5/48, of 10645 SW 89th Avenue in Miami - was taken into custody by US Marshals without injuries. He was wanted on an escape charge from Alabama, and had originally been in jail on bank fraud and resisting arrest charges.
A third occupant in the suspect vehicle (a white GMC) was questioned, but has not been charged or arrested.
In accordance with U.S. Marshal procedures, the names of the marshals involved in the incident are not being released at this time.
