On March 30, 2002, Steven Morgan, DOB 8/29/82, of 540 Saddle Creek Road in Lakeland, was found deceased by his girlfriend on the floor of his home. An autopsy by Dr. Nelson and subsequent toxicology report revealed there was a high level of Methadone in his blood, and that the cause of death was opiate intoxication.
After several months of investigation, Polk County Sheriff's Homicide Detectives discovered the victim had been sold the prescription drug Methadone, by David Schultz, DOB 7/23/56, of 129 Arizona Avenue in Lakeland. Two prescription bottles in David Shultz's name were recovered during the investigation, and both tested positive for the presence of Methadone at the Florida Department of Law Enforcement laboratory.
After interviews with Schultz and conferral with the State Attorney's Office, a warrant for Schultz's arrest was obtained on December 3, 2002. Schultz was placed into custody without incident on the same day, and is currently being held in the Polk County Jail. Schultz has been charged with one count of Manslaughter (F-2, $5,000 bond), and two counts of the Sale of Methadone (F-2, $5,000 bond each).
