Polk County Sheriff's Office Community Oriented Policing (COP) deputies will hold a Christmas party for more than 100 children and their families on Tuesday, December 17, 2002, at 6:00 p.m., at the Stuart Center, 1702 U.S. Hwy 17 South in Bartow.
At the party, one gift will be handed out to the children to open that night, with additional gifts being sent home to be opened on Christmas Day. The gifts were purchased with a portion of the $22,000 raised by the COPs Golf Tournament earlier this year. Santa and Mrs. Claus will join COPs deputies in spreading Christmas cheer to the children and families. Refreshments, donated by local merchants, will include hot dogs and hamburgers.
Earlier this year, COPs deputies selected
disadvantaged families living in their COPs areas. Deputies made
lists of toys and other items (such as clothing) that will be needed by
those families at Christmas. Deputies then went shopping at area
K-mart stores for the gifts that will be handed out Tuesday night.
Both the Winter Haven and Lakeland K-Mart stores supported the project
with generous discounts.
