Shooting At Cookout Results In The Death Of A Lakeland Man

At approximately 6:40 p.m. yesterday (Sunday), Polk County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a shooting at 6608 Shepherd Oaks Pass in Lakeland.

Polk Sheriff's detectives learned that Michael Redish, DOB 12/27/78, of 6608 Shepherd Oaks Pass in Lakeland, and his wife had  several friends and family members over for a cookout yesterday afternoon. Those who attended  the cookout included Joseph Conner (who's related to Redish by marriage), DOB 2/5/75, of 605 S. Saddle Creek Farm Rd. in Lakeland, his wife and a male friend.  At some point during the gathering, the male friend who came to the party with the Conners began acting disorderly.

Eventually, Redish and the Conners' friend (who had been drinking) began fighting in the backyard of the residence.  According to witnesses, Joseph Conner became involved in the altercation and threatened to kill Redish several times. The fight then moved inside and into Redish's bedroom.  While in the bedroom, Redish grabbed a handgun and shot Conner one time in the abdomen.

Conner was airlifted to Lakeland Regional Medical Center in critical condition. At approximately 3:30 a.m. this morning (Monday), Conner died from his injuries.

Sheriff's Office detectives have not charged Redish in the shooting.  The case will handed over to the State Attorney's Office. The State Attorney's Office will review the detectives' findings and determine whether or not to charge Redish.
