Polk County Sheriff's Office detectives charged Polk County Jail inmate Sandchase Cody, DOB 6/23/73, tonight with 1 count Principal in Escape (F2) and 1 count Conspiracy (F3), after they learned through investigation that Cody swapped armbands with fellow inmate Shenard D. Dumas (DOB 2/22/79) and gave Dumas personal information about himself, with which Dumas used to escape from the jail on March 21, 2003 (see earlier news release entitled "Escaped Inmate Shenard Dumas Sought", dated March 22, 2003).
Cody has been in the South County Jail since 12/12/02, on charges of 2 counts Shooting Into an Occupied Dwelling, 1 count Aggravated Battery with Deadly Weapon, and 1 count Possession of Firearm by Convicted Felon. His bond was set at $50,000. The new charges carry a bond amount of $5,000 for the Escape, and $1,000 for the Conspiracy.
Dumas, who is still at large, has an extensive criminal history, and was most recently serving time for 15 offenses, including Aggravated Assault and Battery, Cocaine Possession, Armed Robbery, Armed Kidnapping, Armed Burglary of a Residence, Grand Theft of a Firearm, and Possession of Firearm by Convicted Felon. He is also facing charges by the U.S. Marshal Service. There is now a Polk County warrant for his arrest charging him with Escape and Conspiracy.
Dumas is described as a black male, 5'10", 150 lbs. His last known address was 2450 West Lime Street in Lakeland. His mug shot can be seen on website www.polksheriff.org, under Jail Information Inquiries or Breaking News.
