Detectives Arrest Rapist

Polk County Sheriff's Office detectives have arrested a former Polk County man and charged him with raping at least two women in Polk County in 2000.

Former Polk County resident Johnny Mac Evans, DOB 12/11/49, currently of Port Orange, Florida, was arrested on Tuesday, May 20, 2003, and charged by warrant with two counts Sexual Battery and two counts Kidnapping.

The suspect was arrested at his place of employment in Daytona Beach. He was booked-in to the Volusia County jail system on the Polk warrant. He also is facing additional charges from that jurisdiction (contact Daytona Police Department for additional information on  other charges).  He eventually will be brought back to Polk County to face the Polk charges. He was booked-in under no bond.

During the lengthy investigation, detectives determined that on May 10, 2000, Evans sexually battered a 23-year-old self-admitted prostitute from the Orlando area after picking her up in Orlando and driving her to a grove in the Northeast area of Polk County.

Detectives also determined that on May 31, 2000, Evans sexually battered a 38-year-old Lakeland woman after picking her up in a local bar and driving her to a grove area in the Northeast area of the county.  DNA evidence taken at the time of the sexual battery incidents provided a break in the cases when a match linking Evans to both cases was made in April of 2003.

The investigation is continuing.
