PCSO COPS deputies operate the camp, with each deputy working as either a camp counselor or a program instructor. This enables deputies and campers to work together and build relationships. Through these positive interactions, deputies help build a positive image within the communities they serve. Camp activities include counselors hunt, capture the flag, and Camping Olympics.
Educational programs include archery, outdoor skills, water safety, fishing, and science and nature classes. Field trips are planned to such venues as museums, aquariums, and baseball spring training. All programs, classes and field trips are designed to encourage learning and help kids to expand their horizons.
Operational costs for the Silver Star Youth Camp are covered by partnerships with county agencies, community sponsorships, donations, grants and registration fees. The registration fees are kept affordable - at only $10 per camper for children ages 8 - 12 years old - to help make the camp available to all interested families. Breakfast and lunch are provided for the kids every day courtesy of the Polk County School Board.
To request a pre-registration form, call the PCSO Southwest District substation at 499-2400.
