The Polk County Sheriff's Office is mourning the loss of 52-year-old retired Sergeant Gary Shiver this afternoon, Monday, July 22, 2003. PCSO deputies responded to a call by EMS around 3:00 p.m., who received a call from family members, and found Gary Shiver deceased on his porch in Kathleen. His death has been ruled a homicide by investigators, and his brother, Ronald Shiver, of 11441 Old Dade City Road in Kathleen, was arrested for First Degree Murder on the same day.
Gary Shiver was a U.S. Marine Corps and Vietnam war veteran, former wildlife officer, and former Florida Highway Patrol trooper. He began his career at PCSO in 1979 as a Deputy Sheriff. He was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in 1987, and worked in several capacities, including Patrol, Community Services, and Traffic. Gary Shiver retired in 1998 after 19 years of honorable service with the agency.
