A PCSO Detention Deputy was arrested today (Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2003) and charged with Child Neglect (F3) for failing to provide a child in his care with proper medical care.
Derek Wade, DOB 9/8/72, was arrested at a residence located at 730 West Myrtle Street in Lakeland at approximately 4:30 p.m. this afternoon. He will be booked into the Polk County Jail on $1,000 bond.
The PCSO investigation revealed that Wade failed to provide proper medical care to an 8-year-old male in his care when he delayed in taking the child to the hospital for treatment despite being told by a primary care physician that the child's respiratory illness was life-threatening and needed immediate attention and treatment in a hospital. Instead of taking the child directly to the hospital for care as instructed, Wade waited several hours, at which time the child's condition had worsened considerably. By failing to heed the physician's orders, Wade failed to provide the services necessary to maintain the child's physical health. Wade's wife, Regina Wade, DOB 7/12/77, also was arrested on the same charge.
Smith was hired by the PCSO Department of
Detention in 1995, and his most recent assignment was at Central County
Jail in Bartow.
