Sheriff Lawrence W. Crow, Jr., is pleased to announce that for the third year in a row, crime in unincorporated Polk County, over which the Polk County Sheriff's Office has jurisdiction, has decreased. During the first six months of 2003, crime went down 4%, compared to the same time period in 2002. According to recently released semi-annual statistics from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE), the overall crime reported in Florida decreased 1.3% the first six months of the year.
From January to June 2003, compared to January to June 2002, crime in unincorporated Polk in nearly all measured categories had decreases, some of them double-digit. Another way of looking at it: non-violent crimes dropped 5%, and violent crimes went down 2% overall.
