Polk County Sheriff's homicide detectives are conducting a death investigation after an apparent accidental shooting occurred on Thanksgiving day, November 27, 2003.
25-year-old Charles McBride, Jr., of 3301 Maine Ave lot 27, in Lakeland, was visiting with several of his cousins at his home when his 14-year-old female cousin asked to see his .22 caliber handgun. McBride took the clip out, cleared the chamber, and handed her the gun. Unfortunately there was one bullet stuck in the chamber, and the girl pulled the trigger, striking her 17-year-old sister in the chest. Tanya Edwards, 8/31/86, of 4737 Rustic Court West in Lakeland was killed almost instantly. Her sister did not intentionally point the weapon at her, it just happened to be aimed in that direction.
All statements of the witnesses, who are the 2 girls' brother and McBride's sister, are consistent. This tragedy is still being investigated but there does not appear to be a criminal charge forthcoming.
