Did you know that 1 in 4 children is exposed to unwanted sexual images online? Or that 1 in 5 children receives a sexual solicitation online? In an effort to assist parents with Internet safety issues, the Sheriff’s Office is offering Internet safety programs, along with our wide array of other crime prevention methods.
Two public presentations on Internet Safety: Preventing Child Exploitation are being offered, in conjunction with local Parent/Teacher groups. Our own Colonel Grady Judd will be the keynote speaker at both events. On Tuesday, January 20th, at 7:00 p.m., the presentation will be offered at Lake Gibson Middle School. On Tuesday, February 24th, at 7:00 p.m., Lawton Chiles Middle School PTO Group in Lakeland is assisting us in hosting another presentation.
Every household represented at these presentations will receive a complimentary copy of Computer COP®, a computer-monitoring software program. Due to the mature and explicit content of the presentation, children should not attend.
We realize families are busy, and time is precious; however, we feel strongly about informing parents about Internet dangers and equipping them with the resources necessary to prevent our most precious resource – our children – from being victimized. An hour of time set aside now to educate parents can prevent a lifetime of heartache.
