Sheriff Issues Curfew for All of Polk County

Polk County Sheriff Lawrence W. Crow, Jr., declares a State of Emergency exists in Polk County under the provisions of Florida Statute 870.043, because of clear and present danger of general public disorder in the Polk County disaster areas due to Hurricane Jeanne.

The Sheriff is declaring a dusk to dawn curfew for the entire county. Violation of the curfew is a M1 (first degree misdemeanor). The curfew will remain in place until further notice. The curfew is in effect to deter crimes of opportunity, such as looting, and to provide safety for citizens in damaged areas.

Due to significant power outages and severe flooding, residents are asked to stay indoors even during daylight hours. Do not try to negotiate floodwaters, as they can be fast-moving and deeper than they appear.
