Lakeland Man Arrested for Possession of child Pornography

Polk County Sheriff's Computer Crimes detectives arrested a Lakeland man after seizing his computer during a search warrant and discovering over 40 images of child pornography.

William Hurley Smith, DOB 10/11/63, of 7912 Grand Pine Blvd. in Lakeland, apparently had been taking photographs of children in his neighborhood while they were outside playing, unknown to them or their parents. Smith admittedly hid himself nearby while taking the photos.  Word of the pictures eventually reached some of the parents, who then contacted the Sheriff's Office.

When Smith was approached by detectives for questioning on August 30th, he admitted to taking the photos, which is not illegal, and gave consent to search his residence and computer.  Smith then abruptly armed himself with a .45 caliber pistol and barricaded himself in his home.  Deputies were able to convince him to come outside, and they Baker Acted him. They then obtained a search warrant for the residence and computer, and located 45 images of child pornography on his computer.

On October 5, 2004, a warrant for Smith's arrest was issued, and deputies took him into custody without incident. He was booked into the Polk County Jail on 10 charges of Possession of Obscene Material. He posted the $10,000 bail and was released the same day.
