PCSO And Keep Polk County Beautiful Start "Graffiti Hurts"

The Polk County Sheriff's Office and Keep Polk County Beautiful have implemented a "Graffiti Hurts" pilot program to address graffiti issues facing Polk County businesses.

The program consists of an agreement between local businesses, PCSO, Keep Polk Beautiful, and Sherwin-Williams Diversified Brands, Inc., a producer of the Krylon brand of aerosol spray paint. Each entity agrees to the terms of the program, which are:

  • Participating businesses sign a one-year commitment to the program.
  • Businesses agree to report graffiti to the Sheriff's Office immediately.
  • PCSO documents and photographs the graffiti.
  • Keep Polk Beautiful and Sherwin-Williams provide the paint needed to paint over the graffiti - the paint will either be recovered from Polk County Solid Waste, or provided at a discount from Sherwin-Williams stores, depending on the color requested.
  • Businesses agree to paint over the graffiti, using their own brushes and tools. If unable to do so, PCSO will provide this service, utilizing boot camp recruits and/or jail inmates.

Prompt graffiti removal, preferably within 24 hours of its appearance, demonstrates to vandals that graffiti will not be tolerated. With continuous and complete removal, vandals understand that they are wasting their time and materials at the site and will not seek out another location.

Sheriff's Office deputies have used paint provided from Polk County Solid Waste for quite some time in graffiti abatement projects. Use of this paint offers multiple financial benefits. It is free, and, when re-used, it doesn't have to be disposed of as hazardous waste at the Landfill, which saves taxpayers' dollars.
