Deputies to Give out Glow Sticks for Trick-or-Treating

In an effort to promote safety and provide safe trick-or-treating for Halloween this year, Polk County Deputy Sheriffs will be handing out glow sticks to children in neighborhoods during their routine patrols.

The glow sticks are provided free of charge to the community. There are 2000 to give away countywide, or 500 per Sheriff's Office district. The deputies will have them in their patrol cars and will hand them out from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 30, 2004. Children are encouraged to approach deputies during this time frame and ask for their glow stick to use and keep.

In addition to carrying a glow stick or flashlight, here are some other Halloween safety tips Sheriff Crow would like children  to heed:

  • Cross streets only at corners
  • Never cross between parked cars
  • Walk facing oncoming traffic if there is no sidewalk
  • NEVER go into a stranger's house

Parents are reminded to know the route their children will be taking, ensure they are accompanied by an adult, and set limits on when they should return home. Also, instruct your children not to eat any treats until they return home and you have had a chance to inspect the treats.
