Raccoon Tests Positive for Rabies - Tenth Confirmed Case This Year

Polk County Sheriff's Animal Services Division has confirmed the tenth occurrence of rabies in the county so far this year.

A privately-owned dog was attacked by a raccoon in the 500 block of Red Grave Road in Davenport on October 18, 2004. The raccoon was captured, tested, and destroyed on that same day. Tests came back from the state crime lab today confirming that the raccoon was rabid.

Animal Control Officers will make contact with the dog's owner(s) to ensure the dog is properly maintained and quarantined if necessary, in the best interest of public safety.
