Polk County Sheriff’s Office Deputies Charge Winter Haven Man in 11 Burglaries, 79 Criminal Charges; Investigation Continues

Between December 20, 2014 and January 5, 2015, 9 businesses in the area of Winter Lake Road, Waterfield Road and Highway 92, had burglaries with property damage, property stolen, and vehicles missing.  Most of the business properties had chain link fences which had been cut.  In one crime, the bolt cutters missing from one location were discovered at another business which had also been burglarized.  Through their investigation, detectives developed a suspect.

41-year-old John Goguen, 710 Byni Ridge, Winter Haven, had been found sleeping in a truck at a business located on Winter Lake Road, at approximately 8:45 am, on Friday, December 5, 2014.  Polk County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the business and had placed Goguen under arrest charging him with Burglary of an Unoccupied Structure and Burglary of Unoccupied Conveyance.  Goguen was transported to the Polk County Jail where he remained until he bonded out on December 10th.

Detectives learned after his release on December 10th, Goguen had discussed crimes he had committed since being released from jail.  Deputies began a search for Goguen who was ultimately located by a PCSO K-9 in the 700 block of Lake Jessie Drive, as he attempted to flee on Tuesday, January 6, 2015 around 6:10 pm.

Goguen was once again booked into the Polk County jail.

“Goguen was a one-man crime wave.  After multiple arrests and several stays in prison, he’s clearly not learned his lesson.  He has earned a trip back to prison & we hope he stays there for a while.”  Grady Judd

Since December 5, 2014, Goguen has committed 11 business burglaries at nine business locations – two businesses were victimized twice.

Goguen currently faces a total of 79 charges:

13 counts of Grand Theft

10 counts of Burglary-Unoccupied Structure Unarmed

23 counts of Burglary – Unoccupied Conveyance

8 counts of Misdemeanor Criminal Mischief

4 counts of Felony Criminal Mischief

6 counts of Grand Theft Auto

2 counts of Resisting w/o Violence

1 count of Petit Theft

1 count of Possession of Methamphetamine

1 count of Possession of Drug Paraphernalia

10 counts of contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor (Minor children were present during the commission of 10 incidents – those children are not charged and their identities will not be released)

Goguen has been in the Polk County jail a total of 11 times.  He has been in prison 6 times previously with the most recent release of April 1, 2013, his criminal arrest history includes a total of 25 felonies, 19 misdemeanors, 12 unknown level charges, and one failure to appear.

The investigation is ongoing.
