The Polk County Sheriff’s Office Animal Control Section confirmed today, Tuesday, January 22, 2013, the first positive Rabies case in Polk County for the year.
On Wednesday, January 18, 2103, a bat was impounded by PCSO Animal Control from 355 1st Avenue North in Lake Wales. The homeowner saw his three dogs sniffing around an injured bat just outside the house.
The bat's carcass was sent for testing and was confirmed positive for rabies by the State Laboratory today, Tuesday, January 22, 2013. This is the first positive rabies case this year in Polk County.
Residents are reminded that bats and raccoons are among the mammals considered to be high risk species or “rabies vector species” (RVS). Please do not approach any animal which is acting in an unusual or suspicious manner.
