On Thursday, February 20, 2014, The U.S. Marshals Florida Regional Fugitive Task Force working with the U.S. Marshals North Carolina Fugitive Task Force, arrested 38-year-old Don Cornelius Stephens, who had three Polk County burglary warrants for his arrest for removing personal property during school hours from Polk County schools. He also had two Polk County Felony Petit Theft warrants.
Stephens was located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and has been booked into the Forsyth County (NC) jail. Additional Polk County charges against Stephens are pending. North Carolina officials are also investigating whether or not he has been committing similar thefts there. If he faces charges there, he will be extradited back to Polk County after the disposition of any N.C. charges.
Stephens has an extensive criminal history to include numerous charges for Burglary and Theft. Stephens was released from Prison on December 23, 2013, after completing a five year sentence for committing similar crimes at four other elementary schools in Polk County in 2009..
