On Wednesday, March 16, 2011, at 2:00 p.m. at the Sheriff's Operations Center in Winter Haven, radio personality Bubba the Love Sponge will be presenting a check to the family of Sgt. Wes Whitmore, who was killed in the line of duty on December 12, 2010.
The monetary donation was made possible through sponsors Stingray Chevrolet, the Wing House in Lakeland, and Cox Communications, as well as motorcycle riders who came from the central Florida area to participate in a memorial ride in honor of Sgt. Whitmore on Saturday, January 29, 2011.
Nearly 500 bikers participate in the ride, which was led by Sheriff Grady Judd in a PCSO patrol car. The ride lasted approximately 45 minutes, and Polk County residents all along the way respectfully waved, took photos, and cheered to see all the bikers and law enforcement officers. The riders were then treated to a meal at the Wing House.
The check that will be presented to Sgt. Whitmore's wife, Sherry, will be in the amount of $16,000.
"On behalf of the men and women of the Polk County Sheriff's Office who put their lives on the line every day, and their family members who love and support them, we thank Bubba the Love Sponge and his good friends at Stingray Chevrolet, the Wing House, and the motorcycle riders who made this generous contribution to the Whitmore family." -- Sheriff Grady Judd
