Attempted murder suspect 18-year-old Gregory Leon Ragins captured in Tampa by U.S. Marshals Florida Regional Fugitive Task Force

The suspect in a March 6, 2015 Polk County shooting and armed robbery has been captured in Hillsborough County.   18-year-old Gregory Leon Ragins of Plant City was arrested on North 49th Street yesterday in Tampa by the U.S. Marshals Florida Regional Fugitive Task Force.  The Polk County Sheriff’s Office, Osceola County Sheriff’s Office, Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, and Tampa Police Department have been working with the Marshals Fugitive Task Force to locate Ragins.  The Tampa Police Department assisted with the arrest.  At the time of his arrest Ragins was in possession of a black 2012 Honda Accord–this vehicle was taken during a carjacking that occurred in Osceola County on 03/08/2015.  A silver 32 caliber revolver (matching the description of the gun used in the Polk County shooting) was found in the jacket pocket of Rigins during a search.  He had a felony amount of marijuana in his pants pocket.  Also, a pistol grip shotgun, several credit cards (taken during an armed robbery in Hillsborough County on March 9, 2015), and cash were located in the stolen car.

He has been booked into the Hillsborough County Jail and charged with the following:

Polk County – Warrant – Attempted Murder

Shortly before 9:00 p.m., on Friday, March 6, 2015, a black male, later identified as Ragins, entered the Prima Store located at Highway 60 and County Line Road, Lakeland, and made a purchase.  Ragins exited the store and got into the driver’s side seat of a black, newer model Toyota Corolla or similar body-style car.  A witness leaving the store observed the suspect vehicle’s door ajar and noticed the black male holding a handgun.  The witness turned and attempted to run back into the store when he was shot in the leg.  The suspects fled the scene traveling east on Highway 60.  The witness was treated and released from an area hospital.

Moments later, a vehicle matching the same description, pulled into the parking lot of the Hess Gas Station located at 4785 State Road 60 West.  The passenger in the car (not yet identified) approached a second victim and pointed a small silver handgun at him and demanded money.  After taking property from the victim, the suspect reentered the passenger side of the vehicle which then fled west on highway 60.

Ragins was later identified through video surveillance images at the Prima Store.

Ragins’ previous arrest history (all in Hillsborough County) includes two counts of lewd and lascivious conduct, failure to appear in court (2 counts, for the lewd/lascivious conduct charges), robbery/home invasion, failure to appear in court (2 counts), and petit theft.
