Lakeland Woman Arrested For Breaking Into Occupied Residence

Polk County Sheriff’s detectives have arrested a Lakeland woman who broke into an occupied home on Cherry Tree Drive in Lakeland this past weekend.

According to the affidavit (see attached) 31-year-old Megan Michelle Jones (DOB 10/18/81) of 5644 Cherry Wood Circle in Lakeland was found standing in the bedroom of a home by the homeowners, during the evening hours of Friday, March 30, 2013.

According to the victims, they heard a noise on the baby monitor that sounded like someone was in their baby’s room, and when they went into the room they saw an unknown white female leaning into the baby’s crib.  The male homeowner grabbed the suspect, who said to him, “It’s not what you think,” and pleaded with him not to throw her out, saying, “He’s gonna kill me.”  (Detectives believe she was referring to a male suspect who was outside the house at the time, committing the burglary with her.  They are still seeking the identity and location of this suspect.)  The baby was not harmed during this incident.

The homeowner threw the suspect out of his house and called PCSO.  The victims gave deputies a detailed description of the suspect, which also matched the description of a suspect wanted in another burglary that same night.  The suspect gained entry into the home by breaking a living room window and crawling through it.

The suspect was positively identified as Megan Jones, and detectives located her on April 1, 2013.  Jones admitted to breaking a window at a house in her neighborhood in Lakeland, but claimed she had been drinking that night and doesn’t remember what happened.

Megan Jones was previously processed at the Polk County Jail on February 16, 2013, for Knowingly Driving While License Suspended and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and sentenced to 30 days in the work release program.  She was serving that sentence when she committed this crime.  She has now been booked into the Polk County Jail and charged with one count Attempted Kidnapping (F-1) and one count Unarmed Burglary of an Occupied Dwelling (F-2).

“Luckily nobody was injured during Megan Jones’ crime spree.  These victims did the right thing by not engaging with the suspect, removing her from their home, and then immediately calling law enforcement.  With their quick thinking and cooperation, we were able to swiftly identify and apprehend this suspect before she victimized any other families.” – Sheriff Grady Judd

Jones has been in the Polk County Jail on eight prior occasions, for charges such as: Possession of Controlled Substance, Possession of Marijuana, Reckless Driving, and several counts of Battery.  See below list of prior arrests:
