PCSO Homicide Detectives Arrest Suspect in 2007 Cold Case

On Thursday, April 10, 2014, the Grand Jury of the 10th Judicial Circuit Court indicted 22-year-old Theodore Williams, DOB 01/23/1992, 1145 Fleming Avenue, Lakeland, for the November 2007 Murder of 25-year-old Roberto Mayorga.  Polk County Sheriff’s Office Homicide detectives then arrested Williams on the charges which include: 1st Degree Murder, Attempted 2nd Degree Murder, Attempted Robbery with Firearm, and Attempted Robbery with Firearm.  He remains in the Polk County Jail on no bond.

At approximately 8:52 pm on Wednesday, November 21, 2007, PCSO deputies received a call in reference to a shooting that had occurred in the parking lot of the Sunny's Food Plaza, 2085 West Highland Street, Lakeland.  (The plaza is on the corner of Wabash Avenue and West Highland Street.)  The incident took place in the south east portion of the parking lot.

Through the investigation, detectives determined, Williams approached Roberto and his brother Sergio Mayorga and brandished a weapon demanding money.  Williams first pointed the gun at Sergio, then turned the gun toward Roberto who was sitting inside his black 2005 Dodge Stratus.  Williams shot Roberto, killing him, then Williams fled the area on foot.

Williams was interviewed early in the investigation, however, Williams said he was at church with his mother at the time of the incident – his mother had originally confirmed the details.  As the investigation progressed, detectives learned the church Williams claimed to have attended had dismissed before Roberto had been shot.

During the course of the investigation, with the assistance of a sketch artist from Lakeland Police Department, Sergio was able to complete a composite sketch which displayed similar characteristics as that of Williams.  A photo-lineup was prepared containing Williams image and shown to Sergio who immediately identified Williams as the suspect who shot and killed his brother.

After being asked how he knew that was the suspect he selected, Sergio stated he “would never forget the face of the person” who killed his brother.

The investigaiton is ongoing.
