Polk County Sheriff's Homicide deputies arrested 23-year-old Christopher Chase Whaley (DOB 9/30/1988) on Sunday, April 29, 2012, and charged him with First Degree Murder in the stabbing death of his 69-year-old grandmother, Barbara Denmark, in Lake Wales.
According to the affidavit, Whaley told detectives that on Saturday, April 28th, he got into an argument with his grandmother and his aunt in Daytona Beach, where they went to spend the day. He was angry because they were ready to leave, and he was not. He decided after the argument that when he returned home he would kill them both. Whaley has been living with Barbara in her mobile home, located at the Enchanted Grove Mobile Home Park, 5137 North Scenic Highway, lot 15 in Lake Wales, for the past five years. His aunt, Cassandra Pippin, lives in another mobile home in that park.
When Whaley returned home he sat in his bedroom and thought about committing the murders. He then went into the kitchen and grabbed two knives, went to find his grandmother, and then stabbed her repeatedly while she was taking a bath. He left the room and came back to find her out of the tub and lying on her bedroom floor. She told him, "I love you," and then immediately became unresponsive. He decided at that point not to kill his aunt, but instead to call 911 and report the crime. He was waiting inside the home when deputies arrived, and turned himself in.
Whaley has been booked into the Polk County Jail for First Degree Murder.
