On Thursday, July 14, 2011, Polk County Sheriff's School Resource deputies and PCSO Explorers (Explorers are high school student volunteers) conducted "Operation Pop Top" in an effort to combat the illegal sale of alcohol and tobacco to minors. The operation was conducted in Lakeland.

During the operation, an attempt to purchase alcohol was made at 4 stores, with 2 in compliance.

31-year-old Derya Cenberoglu, DOB 9/9/79, of 140 Glendale Street #251 in Lakeland, was arrested and charged with one count Sale of Alcohol to a Person Under 21. Cenberoglu works at the Mobil gas station located at 2908 South Florida Avenue in Lakeland.

45-year-old Kimberly Dawn Smith, DOB 9/8/65, of 6235 Pinewood Village Circle East in Lakeland, was arrested and charged with one count Sale of Alcohol to a Person Under 21. Smith works at the Circle K store located at 933 West Pipkin Road in Lakeland.

The following stores were found to be in compliance with Florida Law and did not sell an alcoholic beverage to person under 21:
