During a joint investigation, on Tuesday, August 7, 2012, Polk County Sheriff’s detectives and Haines City Police detectives arrested two men and two women in the homicide of 36-year-old Homero Arteaga.
According to the affidavits, on Monday, August 6th, Arteaga was found deceased in his home at 421 North 21st Street in Haines City, by his mother when she went to check on him because she had not heard from him in a few days. Haines City Police Officers arrived on scene and located Arteaga’s body in his bedroom, the obvious victim of a violent and suspicious death.
An autopsy was conducted today by Dr. Vera Volnikh, who concluded Arteaga died as a result of multiples blunt force injuries to his head. His manner of death was ruled a homicide.
PCSO and HCPD detectives worked together throughout the day and night following up leads on this case, and identified four suspects. They are:
31-year-old Christopher Mason Batchelor, DOB 08/30/80, of 4123 Vista Del Lago in Winter Haven;
45-year-old John Wesley Barrett, DOB 05/03/67, of 4120 Vista Del Lago in Winter Haven;
25-year-old Jenny Leigh Holmes, DOB 10/17/86, of 5748 Pipes Road in Bartow;
39-year-old Dana Lynn Wise, DOB 10/13/1972, Address unknown
During post-Miranda interviews with suspects, they told detectives that together they planned to rob the Arteaga in his home on Saturday night, August 4th. Jenny Holmes and Dana Wise drove Christopher Batchelor and John Barrett into Arteaga’s neighborhood and dropped them off one street east of the house. Batchelor and Barrett walked to Arteaga’s house and entered it armed with a metal pipe, with the purpose of stealing any money and drugs they could find. When they gained access inside the house, they found Arteaga sleeping in his bed. They struck him in the head with the metal pipe, and began ransacking the house. They told detectives that each time Arteaga “woke up” they would strike him again.
After killing and robbing Arteaga, the two men were picked up again by Jenny Holmes and Dana Wise, and they discarded the murder weapon while driving away from the scene.
