Two Charged in Winter Haven Homicide

“Our deputies and detectives have been working tirelessly to bring to justice those responsible for this senseless killing.  I’d also like to thank those in the community who have worked with us to help us solve this brutal murder." – Sheriff Grady Judd

Polk County Sheriff's homicide detectives have charged two suspects in the murder of Carl Booker that occurred on August 4, 2013, in Winter Haven.

24-year-old Alexander "A-Rod" Rodriguez of 102 Landings Way Apt 6-A in Winter Haven, who was already in the Polk County Jail on unrelated charges, has been charged with Second Degree Murder.  The other suspect, 23-year-old Alfred "Sean" Ervin of 25 S 22nd Street in Haines City, had a warrant for his arrest for Second Degree Murder, and on Friday, August 16, 2013, was located and placed under arrest in Winter Haven.

According to the affidavit, the victim, 25-year-old Carl “TJ” Booker of 502 Evergreen Place in Winter Haven, was shot and killed in an apparent drive-by shooting around 3:30 a.m. on August 4, 2013, while he was standing outside a residence on 5th Street Northeast in Winter Haven.

After an extensive investigation involving interviews with several witnesses and the collection and examination of numerous pieces of evidence, detectives pieced together the events that led to Booker's murder:

  • Around 2:00 a.m. on 8/4/2013 - Booker (AKA "TJ") was involved in a verbal altercation with a group of men outside the “Bar Red” in Winter Haven; the men were travelling in a white SUV.
  • A short time later - Booker was again seen involved in a verbal altercation with the same group of men in the white SUV at the 3-Brothers store on Avenue T in Winter Haven; Booker then left the store and traveled to 5th Street NE.
  • Around 3:30 a.m. - The white SUV approached Booker as he stood at the edge of the roadway on 5th Street NE; witnesses observed the front window of the SUV come down and hear the driver shout at Booker, "I told you I was gonna get you [explicative]!" and then several gunshots were fired, one striking Booker and killing him; the SUV then fled the scene.
  • Witnesses observed another man in the back seat of the SUV, and he was also heard yelling at Booker during the shooting.
  • PCSO Central District Crime Suppression Team deputies worked day and night to identify the driver and passenger; Through their efforts, one passenger in the SUV was positively identified as 24-year-old Alexander "A-Rod" Rodriguez of 102 Landings Way Apt 6-A in Winter Haven.
  • Rodriguez is currently in the Polk County Jail for unrelated charges of Possession of Marijuana and Possession of Ammunition by a Convicted Felon.
  • On Friday, August 16, 2013, Polk County Homicide detectives filed add-on charges against Rodriguez in this case, for Second Degree Murder.
  • The driver of the SUV was positively identified as 23-year-old Alfred "Sean" Ervin of 25 S 22nd Street in Haines City.
  • Polk County homicide detectives obtained a warrant for Ervin's arrest for Second Degree Murder; around 7:00 p.m. on Friday, August 16, 2013, with help from the U.S. Marshals Florida Regional Fugitive Task Force, Ervin was located at 256 Kings Pond Road in Winter Haven and taken into custody without incident; He is also being charged with Possession of Marijuana Over 20 Grams, Possession of Marijuana WITS, and Maintaining House for Drug Sales.

“For those who don’t think that possessing or selling illegal drugs is dangerous, take a look at these two suspects’ criminal histories.  As young as they both are, neither are strangers to the criminal justice system, and now they are both violent felons.  They are both going to be behind bars for a very, very long time – where they belong.”  - Sheriff Grady Judd.
