At approximately 7:25 pm, on Saturday, August 24, 2013, a Polk County Sheriff’s Office deputy responded to the Avon Park Youth Academy, 242 South Boulevard, Avon Park, after receiving a report of a Battery to a G4S staff member.
17-year-old Zayroux Cleveland Graham, DOB 9/6/1995, 17645 NW 22nd Avenue, Miami Gardens, is a resident of the facility and attempted to enter a building he was unauthorized to enter. When confronted by G4S staff member, 43-year-old Paul McDonald, and told he was not allowed to enter the area, Graham flinched at McDonald as if to intimidate him. Graham appeared to turn to walk away only turning back and striking McDonald in the mouth with a closed fist. McDonald fell to the ground and did not fight back.
The PCSO deputy arrived and placed Graham under arrest. McDonald sustained a laceration to his lower lip but declined medical attention.
Graham was transported to the Juvenile Assessment Center for processing. Graham was charged with Battery on Detention Staff: Juvenile Probation Officer (F-3).
Graham has been incarcerated at the Avon Park Youth Academy since January 2013 for Carrying a concealed Firearm. His criminal arrest history includes: two other Battery convictions, March 2009 – Battery on a Law Enforcement Officer and September 2009 – Simple Battery.
Graham has also been identified as one of the youths who actively participated in the August 17th riot which occurred at the Youth Academy facility. Graham was among the 64 juveniles transported to the PCSO South County Jail in Frostproof in state custody under the supervision of G4S after the riot. Those juveniles were separated by sight and sound from adult inmates arriving on Sunday, August 15th and returning to the Youth Academy on Friday, August 23rd. Charges are pending in that on-going investigation.
PCSO detectives will work with the State Attorney’s Office and request Graham be prosecuted as an adult.
