PCSO Deputies Arrest Two Men For Armed Home Invasion of Elderly Davenport Couple

On September 1, 2011, Polk County Sheriff's Robbery detectives, assisted by Southeast District patrol deputies, identified and arrested two men just after they committed an armed home invasion on an elderly couple in Davenport.

According to their affidavits, Kenneth Lamar Britt, DOB 1/22/90, of 831 Sherwood Drive in Lake Wales, and Charles Edward Stinson, DOB 4/2/1988, of 903 Griffin Road in Frostproof, followed the victims, Carl and Barbara Roark of Davenport, who are 81 and 79 years of age respectively, from the time they left the Eagle Ridge Mall in Lake Wales just before noon, until they arrived at their home in Davenport.

When the Roarks exited their vehicle in their driveway, the suspect later identified as Charles Stinson walked up to them and asked them for directions to Kissimmee. As the Roarks began giving him directions, Stinson pulled out a black handgun, pointed it at them, told them he wanted their money, and ordered them into the house. Once inside the house, Stinson took Mr. Roark's wallet and cash from him and ordered the couple into a closet, telling them to remain there for 5 minutes.

After Stinson fled the scene, the Roarks reported the armed home invasion to the Polk County Sheriff's Office. They noticed that Mrs. Roark's purse was missing, and also gave deputies a detailed description of the suspects, as well as a description of a white cargo van they noticed that had followed them from the mall.

The suspect information was BOLO'ed (Be On Look Out) and shortly thereafter, Southeast District patrol deputies stopped a white cargo van that matched this description on Burns Avenue in Lake Wales. Kenneth Britt was identified as the driver of the van, and Charles Stinson the passenger. Deputies found a black handgun in the van, that they confirmed belonged to Charles Stinson. Deputies also noted the two suspects were wearing the same clothing described by the victims. They also located recently-purchased Chinese food in the van, which their investigation revealed had been purchased with Mrs. Roark's stolen credit card.

Britt and Stinson were taken into custody without incident and interviewed by detectives. They both admitted to committing the armed home invasion. Both were booked into the Polk County Jail on 2 counts Armed Robbery, 1 count Armed Occupied Burglary, and 2 counts Armed Kidnapping. Stinson has an additional charge of 1 count Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon. Both suspects have criminal histories in Polk County, including Armed Robbery.

"Thanks to these two victims, who as traumatized as I'm sure they were, were still able to give our deputies excellent descriptions, and thanks to our diligent deputies who work together every day to solve crimes, these two dangerous men were quickly apprehended and put back into the Polk County Jail where they belong." - Sheriff Grady Judd
